Tumblers and Mugs

What’s the difference between tumbler and mug? Many people’s mind might get blank when be asked such question cause they are just different words of one thing-drink-ware. Actually, there are many detailed differences.

When it comes to tumbler, many people hold the opinion that it is a drink ware for holding hot coffee or water and keep its temperature. Actually, it is not only for holding and keeping the hot, but also for the cold. Keeping temperature, instead of insulation, might be one of the most important characteristics when compared to other kinds of drinking vessels.

If you want to keep beverage’s temperature in a drink-ware, it must be with vacuum structure, which means it must be with double wall structure(there shouble a vacuum space and at least two walls can creates a space),so most of the single wall vessels such as plastic cups and glass mugs barely have no capabilities of keeping temperature, they are usually for on the go drinking.

Another important factor is lid. Slid lid is the most common lid with tumblers. Since a tumbler is usually larger than 20oz(40oz is popular now and some can even achieve 64oz), it is not convenient to drink the water in it directly. Slide lid is suitable for a straw, and when you are not using it cen be slided off to prevent heat loss and pollution from the air. Insteadly, smaller vessels like travel mugs are usually smaller(16oz is the most popular), so a straw seems to be useless with it. Besides, they are not that tall as tumblers and usually come with cute shape, which is more suitable for direct drinking.

Some of above reasons determines if there’s a handle or not. Tumblers are larger, straight shaped and taller, and it always comes with a straw, so usually there’s no need to add a handle to hold. However, most of mugs are little fatty shaped(like the 14oz coffee mug),not easy to hold by hand directly and the beverage is easier to spill out to burn our skin, so it usually comes with a handle.

Of course, they also have different usage scenarios.Tumblers, on the other hand ,can keep hot water or coffee hot for up to 8-12 hours(some of good quality can even achieve longer time) and  cold for about 12 hours under room temperature and have a bigger capacity, which makes them suitable for adding ice to many kinds of beverages – but are not as resistant to spills as a travel mug. For customers who are looking for a bigger drink-ware that can hold more water to support work, driving, school, or going on a road trip, tumblers are the way to go.With a more intact design and spill proof lid, a travel mug is a suitable choice for sports. For those who prefer to elegantly sip on smaller cups of coffee, tea, or other hot drinks throughout the day while running errands, travel mugs are one of the best options.
